Herbert Gollini and Helmut Wolfgruber, protagonists from the electronic music scene in Austria make the facing panels of the MUMOK building resound. The black edifice that has a landmark function in the Vienna Museum Quarter was built in 2001 from plans by the renowned architects Ortner and Ortner and it houses Austria's largest museum of modern and contemporary art. Stoned Tones is based on a system that was specially developed for the museum building and makes use of the sound emitted by the structure's basalt facing plates from Mayen which, depending on size, varies when struck. By employing seismic microphones the sound of the architecture is made audible and transmittable. It is then modified and transposed into contemporary and classical musical systems. An exceptionally wide tonal spectrum enables a complex interplay of melodies, rhythmic displacements, dubbing effects and loops thus creating a characteristic, homogenous tonal cosmos.
